What is “validation” as it relates to employee selection procedures?

Validation is defined as the “demonstration of the job relatedness of a selection procedure.” With respect to the Uniform Guidelines, there are three recognized strategies used to determine validation. They are: Criterion-related validity; content validity; and construct validity.

A validation study may be requested by an enforcement officer during the review process. The results of the study will be used by the officer to determine whether the selection process has an adverse impact.
